Start using simple olive or almond oil ear drops twice daily for up to five days prior to your appointment to soften your ear wax and increase the chances of a successful removal. You can buy wax softeners from most high street chemists.
The appointment itself will last around 30 minutes. Will run through some questions, talk you through the process and make sure you’re happy. I use a special camera to look inside your ear, before proceeding to remove any excess earwax. I can take pictures, as this can be useful for comparisons in the future or if you need GP referral.
If there’s no wax to remove you will only be charged for the ear health check. I may advise you to see a GP who could arrange treatment or refer you to a specialist. This may be if you have symptoms of excess earwax but no earwax to remove, so your ears can be checked for other causes.
Following treatment:
Some people may feel dizzy afterwards because the system in your body that helps with balance is near the inner structure of your ear. This usually passes quickly.
Please don’t drive while feeling dizzy. It’s best to factor this into your travel plans for attending and getting home, especially if you have previously been dizzy following earwax removal.
If you had been experiencing symptoms such as discomfort, tinnitus, muffled hearing or any other symptoms which have not resolved after earwax removal, you should see a GP to identify the cause of these symptoms.
If any of these symptoms were caused by wax, you can expect them to stop immediately or within a few hours of wax removal.
Please continue to care for your ears.
After water irrigation keep ears dry for three days after your appointment. After microsuction it is not necessary.
Avoid using cotton buds or putting anything in your ears to scratch or try to remove wax. This can make the problem worse and cause damage to your ears.
